Badman and Old Bags

So the Badman thing is really getting on my nerves and causing lots of ranting from the 3 older members of this household.

The very nearly teenager is even more ranty having spent the afternoon researching the home ed situation in Germany (after spending the morning doing band practice and planning meeting and a photo shoot (which they organised and did themselves)) for the forthcoming trip to Germany to make a documentary about the situation.

Perhaps this will be seen as having “pace” (well apparently she did rant so I guess pacing was involved, it usually is), rigour (by the sounds of things she and Holly ranted quite rigorously – while Caleb merely quietly agreed!) and direction (definitely leading towards a documentary filmed in Germany and headed towards Mr Balls (never was a man so well named)). Or possibly not – as it is child directed and planned only last week rather than 12 months in advance and as yet we don’t know what the learning outcomes will be as it will evolve naturally depending on the interests and needs of the group.

Any of you readers not knowing about Badman can start reading here: http://homeschooler.org.uk/start-here The man hasn’t listened to any views of HErs, has used quotes and evidence out of context and shows no understanding at all of any sort of HE particularly more child led philosophies.

Anyway I have decided to publish more blog posts to show what our education is all about and that even without a 12 month or often, quite frankly, a 12 hour plan, we manage to lots of educational things. These are generally child initiated or interest led or adult suggested (because we suspect a child will be interested), but not because an external “expert” (http://www.grahambadman.blogspot.com/) tells us!

So here is the start. Our not young enterprise (because the children aren’t old enough) group, Funky Junk, is making items to sell out of second-hand goods. The thing we are trying out just now is a paper bag made out of newspaper. Rebekah is trying out different patterns found on the internet. She tried one which didn’t work, then another which didn’t look as good, then went back to adapting the first. Well I think it’s educational.
